It was packed on an early Thursday evening at Ponderosa Brewing Co. The band was quite talented, and the Bavarian Belle was center stage. Typically not a fan of the style, but I really enjoyed this beer. From the first whiff to the last drop it went down smooth, dangerously drinkable, and quite memorable. The banana note is subtle, so is the faint hint of vanilla followed by slightest punctuation of clove. Yeast leaves a faint dough presence, something easy to miss in the pleasant fruity bouquet of Diacetyl. The hops as the faintest floral expression also, barely present. This is an immaculate representation of the Weizen style.
Vegetarians and meat-eaters alike can be happy with the menu. From the best “house made” veggie burger of my life, to a beer and cheese soup that was good enough for dessert. My parents who joined me for this venture were blown away by the “stuffed jalapeño appetizer.” I also drank the Kolsch, though a tad hazy for the style, the flavor was just phenomenal.

This was my first experience with a Bavarian style beer. The appearance was cloudy and the color was gold with a touch of orange when held up to the light. The head was small with hardly any lacing following. The first scent of this beer was sweet, even a little floral essence was picked up and low in hop aroma. The first mouthful was a bit tart with a dry finish and was low in bitterness. There was also a hint of banana in the Bavarian Belle. I think that Ponderosa did a fantastic job on this beer!

The Bavarian Belle is a hefe from the Ponderosa Brewing Company in Old Town. I am a huge hefe and wheat beer fan, so I was stoked get my lips on this one. I was happy to see the attentive server deliver my 16 Oz libation in the proper glassware. The appearance get a 4 out of 5 for its classy, cloudy hefe look. The aroma gets a 5 out of 5 it’s got that strong bitter, wheat smell that any good wheat beer should carry. Unfortunately, the taste falls off a bit, I give it a 2.5 out of 5. Honestly, it tastes like miller light. For having such good aroma it’s almost tasteless, easy to drink 2 or 3 of them but not a craft beer lovers type of drink. The brewery is nice, a little too restaurant like for my taste, I prefer a more artsy feel. Overall, a drinkable beer, but not a great hefe.

The Bavarian Belle is a beautiful looking beer. Light yellow color with a slight opaque hue. Topped with a large foamy white head and gorgeous lacing as you drink. First scents are yeast and the sweet hay like aroma often found in Hefes. Clean wheat taste with a slight hint of citrus which I’m guessing is a product of the yeast used. Not a whole lot of hop flavor as expected but a nice balance that is kind of crisp. Overall a great tasting easy drinking spring beer perfect for the warm ABQ weather.
